As we were finishing up a conversation with some tourists from Spain, I suddenly glanced over at our table with tefillin and Jewish literature, to find a whole family of four looking curiously at our setup and speaking Russian. I walked over, and with the few Russian words I know, greeted them and found out they were visiting from Russia.

A major accident on the I-95 Connecticut Turnpike brought traffic to a complete standstill, but for Ari Witkes who was heading to Worcester he found an opportunity to do Mivtzoim. Approaching one man he asked if he was Jewish and upon finding out that he is they immediately put on Teffilin together.

Setting up a Mivtzoim booth at a fun fair is commonplace among Lubavitch Bochurim. A Mivtzoim booth in Crown Heights, however, is quite unheard of. Yet amid the crowds of children dragging their parents from ride to ride at Sunday’s Lag B’Omer fun fair, bochurim were seen asking fellow Chassidim to take part in Mivtzah Torah.

On Sunday May 22nd, over 20,000 people lined the streets of Crown Heights in a display of Jewish Unity and to celebrate the joyous festival of Lag B’omer, the Yurtzait of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai. The Great Parade is based on the legacy of Mesibos Shabbos and Lag B’Omer parades held on Eastern Parkway since the 1940s, and takes place on this scale whenever Lag B’omer falls on a Sunday.
